Prologue
From the first day I came back into town, I knew something in my life was going to change. And it wasn't going to be just a small change, but a change that will affect everyone around me. From what I've seen so far, Stephan is also back in town. He must have figured out the same thing I did. The Gilbert family is still carrying on. When I get into town, I'm going to make the Gilbert family pay. And the rest of the Founders' families, well, we'll see. I feel the need to get Stephan to feel like he wants to come to an end. I guess in some sort of way I blame him for what happened to her. To Katherine. The night she left was like hell. Katherine was the only woman I ever ACTUALLY cared about. When Stephan figured everything out, he just didn't know how to shut his mouth...and now he has to pay. But there is this girl, Elena, that seems to have his attention. A human girl. I don't really have a plan, but I think that maybe if he really cares about her...I'll go after her. It's a start.

I've been waiting 145 years to finally get what I need. The answer to bring Katherine back to me. To make her see why I need her. Everyone, including Stephan, told me that if she REALLY loved me, she would've taken me with her or stayed no matter what. To me she had to do what she had to do. She had to get the hell out of that place... and fast. I can only picture in my head what it was like to hold her in my arms. To feel her touch. And when Stephan went to the council and said Katherine had the Unlimited Power, I felt likemy heart fell to the floor. Like every ounce of blood drained from my body. I see everything over and over in my head. KAtherine being hunted down and shot up with vervane and being musled like a dog and dragged away. The way they treated her like an untamable lion that needed to die. A disease that was killing the whole town. I saw her face as she held out her hand to me. But later that night I remember how I heard screaming..."Get her!" And as I walked to the house where we made sweet music, I see her...running like the wind. She gets closer and closer, and as she approches the door, she sees me.

"Damon! You have to help me! I used my powers to get away, but they won't be far behind. Damon, plz. I love you. Help me get away, and I promise I will come back for you..." She trailed off but I did it anyway. I got her inside the house. She told me to keep the lights off. And that's when I heard it. A growling sound. I turned around to find Katherine standing right behind me. Her eyes are blood red. "I will try to make this as painless as possible." And then she goes in for my neck. At first, I feel nothing. Maybe shock. And then everything begins to spin. I now realize what shes doing. Shes killing me. Just like she promised. And then it ended.I felt my body fall to the ground and the last thing I hear Katherine say is "Good-bye Damon."

The next morning, I see Emily standing above me. She tells me everything. Everything I knew and one thing I didn't expect...Stephan was a vampire too. Apparently, Katherine wanted us to be together as brothers. But it wasn't supposed to be this way. It was only supposed to be me. Not Stephan too. I mean I know they had a thing before I came back from the civil service, but I didn't expect this. I loved her. More than Stephan ever could. Depp in my train of thought, I see Stephan walking up the hill. He stops to say "You're awake," and then sits down.

After 145 years of thinking of a way to start to get Stephan back and a way to find Katherine, the final option came to mind...return to Mystic Falls.
