She is the least endearing character of the three, but throughout the subsequent episodes her relationship with Damon Salvatore leads to a change in her character. Caroline's mother is the sheriff of Mystic Falls. She finds Stefan Salvatore attractive, but is insulted when he rebuffs her advances. She also shares a strong flirtation with Damon, with whom she is currently in a relationship. Since beginning her relationship with Damon, Caroline has begun wearing scarves around her neck to cover the bruises and bite marks left from when Damon feeds on her. |

He does not take to his brother's way of feeding and feeds on humans, killing them sometimes in a rage. He teases with Elena, in an attempt to get her for himself, but fails, for Stefan put vervain in her necklace, so Damon couldn't influence her. He is still upset on the inside about Katherine, and would do anything to get her back. He is also in love with Elena, but is not able to admit it to himself yet, much less Elena or the world. |

Elena was actually in the car, as well, but survived the crash. Now, she must take care of her younger brother, who doesn't react well to being an orphan. He starts to sell drugs at school. Elena tries to put on a happy face at school, but it's difficult. The only people she can talk to are BFF Bonnie and the mysterious new boy walking the hallways, Stefan Salvatore, a vampire in town with his brother. |
