Mini-synopsis: We're introduced to all of the characters including siblings Elena and Jeremy Gilbert (whose parents have passed away) and Stefan and Damon Salvatore (vampires from the Civil War era). Elena and Jeremy are handling their parents death in different ways - Elena is journaling and Jeremy is selling drugs. Elena broke up with her boyfriend Matt Donovan earlier to "be alone" but finds herself drawn to Stefan, the new student at school.
Although Elena's friend Caroline is drawn to Stefan, he seems to prefer the company of Elena who he tracks down at a cemetery. He accompanies her to a local restaurant hangout and Matt seems to be jealous. Elena's friend Bonnie (who is psychic) invites Stefan to join them all at a party the next day.
At the restaurant, Jeremy confronts Vicki Donovan (Matt's sister). Apparently over the summer they hooked up and now Vicki is ignoring him. Vicki writes it off as a mistake while they were high and is worried that her boyfriend Tyler will find out about Jeremy. When Stefan gets home his relative Zack, who knows he is a vampire, accuses him of attacking a couple in the woods. Stefan denies it and it is revealed that he has a picture of a woman named Katherine from 1864 that looks just like Elena.
The next night, everyone is at the party. Elena and Stefan arrive together, but after he sees her talking to Matt he retreats to the woods. Jeremy saves Vicki in the woods when Tyler gets aggressive. She tells him to leave her alone and walks away. She is attacked but her attacker is hidden.
Elena sees Jeremy come out of the woods and assumes he's been doing drugs again. She goes after him to confront him, leaving Stefan at the party. Elena and Jeremy discover Vicki who is weak but still alive. Stefan storms off and arrives at home. He finds Damon waiting there and they fight. Damon tells Stefan that he is back in Mystic Falls for the same reason - Elena. The episode ends with Vicki telling her brother a vampire attacked her and Stefan being invited into Elena's house. | | |
