Mini-synopsis: So much happened in the episode! Small stuff first -

New history teacher Alaric Saltzman appeared, gave Jeremy a second chance and took Jenna out on the town. He assigned Jeremy an extra credit assignment on local history...which leads Jeremy to discover his ancestor's (Johnathan Gilbert) diary from 1864. Jenna and he had a nice time. He said that he was in town because his wife recently died, but something seems suspicious about this story. He has a ring just like the Salvatore boys' and pauses at Jenna's door when he drops her off.

Matt and Caroline have an awkward talk about their sleepover (and it really was just a sleep over) after Stefan's party. At first he brushes her off and then he shows up in her bedroom (creepy much?). He says that he felt weird about it, but a good weird. Now that Vickie and his mom aren't there, he needs someone in his life. They end the episode having a junk food feast on Caroline's bed (totally clothed).

Bonnie, who woke up in the graveyard last episode, is having some weird stuff going on. Damon tries to claim the necklace once again but she brushes him off. She drives out to the middle of nowhere with Elena and tosses the necklace away. When she returns home, it's there! She tries to talk to Elena about it, but Caroline is being annoying. They decide to have a seance and then the light go out. The necklace is gone. Bonnie finds it in the bathroom and gets shut in there by some type of mystical force. Elena and Caroline are pounding on the door as the lights go on and off and the house seems to shake. They get the door open and Bonnie doesn't quite seem herself...she is calm and poised and the reflection in the mirror shows Emily, the ghost who has haunted her dreams.

It turns out Emily is Bonnie's ancestor and was the handmaiden for Katherine....but more on the significance of that later.

Meanwhile, Stefan is still trying to get to the bottom of why Damon is in town. He decides to treat him to some pool and beer. They even try to play football. During their talk, Stefan tells him that he was never in love with Katherine...she had just enchanted him. Damon truly loved her though...and he wants to bring her back!

You see...back when the fire happened in the church supposedly killing all of the vampires, Damon made a deal with Emily. Emily was to protect Katherine with her magic and in exchange Damon could never harm Emily's family. That's why Damon can't hurt Bonnie and couldn't take the necklace by force. Damon wants to resurrect Katherine and needs the necklace to do it. Elena calls Stefan to tell him about Bonnie and Damon overhears. He heads for the cemetery and Stefan follows.

Bonnie/Emily is making her way there too. She says that she can't let them have it, and she's going to destroy it. She encounters Damon in the woods, but she magically throws him into the air. They argue. She says "I won't let you awaken them." And Stefan is confused. Bonnie/Emily reveals that in order to save Katherine she had to save all of the vampires inside....all twenty-seven of them. Damon will effectively be taking revenge on Mystic Falls if he awakens them. Bonnie/Emily sets the ground around her ablaze and then tosses the necklace into the air where it is destroyed. Damon rushes forward and bites Bonnie....Emily has now left her body. Elena screams and Stefan pulls him away. He feeds Bonnie some of his blood to revive her....as long as she doesn't die within the next 24 hours, she'll remain a human and not a vampire.

Bonnie is dazed and Elena loads her into the car, then goes to speak to Stefan. She says that she's telling Bonnie the truth because she needs someone to talk to. She tells Stefan that she's able to be with him, she didn't think she was, but she now knows she has the strength. Stefan says that he can't...it's time for him to move on. He walks away and Damon is seen sitting in the forest looking crestfallen....he's lost Katherine again.

The episode closes with Jenna answering the door late at night.....it's Logan! He asks if he can come in......
