Mini-synopsis: Elena recounts to Stefan what happened before Damon saved her after the car crash. He gives her vervain for herself and her family to protect themselves. Jeremy answers the door for a pizza man and invites him in while Elena retrieves the money. As he leaves he pulls his hood up...just like the creature that tried to attack Elena.
Jeremy gets an A on his history paper, using his grandfather's journal as a source. Mr. Saltzman takes interest in the journal, so Jeremy shares it with his teacher. Elena gifts a vervain necklace to Caroline without telling her what it is. They discuss Matt, who Caroline says they've peaked as friends because Matt isn't over Elena. Matt applies for a job at the Mystic Grill while Elena is there talking with Bonnie about her adoption. As Bonnie tries to leave, Damon arrives and tries to enlist her help...but she refuses. The bartender comes to her rescue. He's a recent graduate of their school and she's surprised he remembers her.
On the way to her car, Elena gets a call from the vampire she hit. He says that he won't let her escape again. Stefan gives Elena her father's pocket watch (which Logan had, and Damon took from him) in order to detect vampires. Stefan says that he knew the Gilberts, and he wants Elena to be protected. Caroline and Matt paint a banner for the school dance, but it ends in a fight when she is surprised he has a job.
Jeremy and Anna run into each other at the pool bar, and she tries to ask him out. He's not interested. Jenna and Elena talk about the dance, but it quickly turns to a talk about the adoption. Jenna says that a 16 year old girl came to her father when she was just about to give birth. They gave her a place to stay but then the girl disappeared, so they kept Elena. All they knew was her name - Isabel.
Stefan delivers their father's journal to Damon, which he has been looking for. Stefan agrees to help him release Katherine, as long as the rest of the vampires stay put. He'll do anything to get Damon to leave town.
As Elena gets ready for the dance, the watch on her bed begins to point out the location of a vampire. She calls Stefan, but Damon answers. When she hears that Stefan is on her way she theorizes that the compass must be detecting him...but the hooded vampire is actually indoors. Stefan saves her just in time. Damon and Stefan decide to go get him tonight. They'll use Elena as bait to get the vampire to come out of hiding.
At the dance, Alaric sees Damon and remembers that he killed his wife and is going to go after him, but Jenna shows up. They share some punch and talk about losing loved ones. Damon tries to talk to Bonnie and Caroline but they stalk off and head toward the Mystic Grill. Alaric approaches Damon and questions him a little too much, which raises Damon's suspicions.
Elena and Stefan share a dance, but the hooded vampire is in the crowd. Anna shows up at the punch table to Jeremy's surprise. Anna is upset when she hears that Jeremy gave Alaric the journal. As she gets angry...her eyes start to darken! She's a young vampire! In the hallway, she approaches the hooded vampire and tells him to leave Elena alone. She says that she is sticking to the plan, unlike him, and if they ever want to get Katherine out of the tomb she needs to follow his lead. She calls him by his name...Noah. He tells her not to worry...they will get what Anna came for, and he'll have a little fun.
Back at the Mystic Grill, Bonnie decides to go talk to the bartender and ask him out, he agrees. Matt is upset because he heard Caroline say that the bartender was a washed up jock. He thinks she's being snobby and he doesn't like the fact that the has to work, but he's willing to do it to make ends meet.
Elena sees Noah along the back wall and Stefan goes to follow him. Once he reaches the hooded figure, he realizes that Noah has given someone else the hoodie. Elena gets a phone call. It's Noah who says that if she doesn't leave the dance, he'll kill Jeremy. She leaves and walks into his trap. He tries to attack her and she's able to fend him off for a while by stabbing him with pencils. Stefan and Damon arrive in time and stab Noah in the stomach. They ask him why he's trying to hurt Elena, and he says it's because she looks like Katherine. He knows how to get in the tomb, and says that they need the spell book and they can find clues to that in the Gilbert's diary. He doesn't let them know about Anna, and Stefan kills him because he's been invited into the Gilbert home.
Alaric enters the hallway and Damon meets him. He attempts to program his mind to forget their conversation, and Alaric pretends that he is being programmed but he was holding vervain in his palm. Stefan and Damon talk about Damon's plan, Damon needs to find the Gilbert diary. Stefan tells Damon again that he'll help to get him out of town, but only if Katherine is the only vampire released.
Back at the Grill, Caroline tries to apologize to Matt. He says he's not over Elena and doesn't want to take the next step with Caroline, so she leaves in a huff. Later, as she's walking home he drives up, gets out and kisses her. Alaric drops Jenna off and asks her out on a date. He mentions his dead wife's name was Isabel...which makes Jenna falter.
Elena and Stefan talk at her home, and she's happy she was able to fight back. He tells her that he told Damon he'd help, but it was a lie. He wanted to gain his trust, but won't actually help him open the tomb.
Back at the grill, the bartender, Ben, is locking up and Anna is tracking him. She sneaks up on him, and he stops her. He's a vampire too! She shares the news of Noah, and she promises she'll get the journal. He says he has the witch crushing on him. They kiss and walk off into the night together. | | |
